I think that your idea of avoiding external validation through making lots of money is really insightful. I am going through a similar situation currently and am working towards creating self-validation over the approval of others.

Which lesson resonated the most with you?

I see lots of people asking for more information and not as many people answering. I'm starting official tutoring soon, but I have been a personal tutor before and I've taught in a classroom. When you're struggling in a class and the teacher sits down and works with you individually, that's tutoring. When that experience is outside the classroom, you have to build your teacher-student relationship IN the session, the timeframe is way shorter. If you l like teachers who are impersonal and objective, you can be that way. If you like teachers who share a little bit about their lives, you should do that, instead. I personally prefer the latter, because it encourages the student to open up to you. Your student should feel safe and comfortable with you so they can MAKE MISTAKES. That's the goal. If they're afraid of making mistakes, they're going to be afraid of performing in front of you. Performing math, literary analysis, coding, whatever. The student should understand you are there to HELP and SUPPORT them to success, no matter what. You're not going to judge them. You're not going to make them feel self conscious or left behind, because when YOU teach/tutor them, you CAN'T leave them behind! It's your job to shore up any gaps in their knowledge! To learn is to grow, and growing is scary and painful at times. You should make your students feel safe. Info dumping - IT DEPENDS!! I've taught a student with autism, and he was labeled 'gifted in math', and he WAS. He is so smart. But because of how his brain works, he likes to know every little detail of how the math works, so I info dump on him because that helps his understanding. Sometimes I info dump on myself, if the students seem interested. Such as places I've lived or my time in the military. You are an example of an adult to your students. You can show them that a variety of adults exist by being yourself.

I'm trying to set myself up as a singing and songwriting coach and as soon as you said "I'm curious about singing" the saleslady in me was like: "YO HIT ME UP GIRL". ;-D And I totally 100% agree with you about values. I spend more money on food than most people, but food brings me so much innate joy that it doesn't make sense not to do that. In contrast, I don't care much for buying the latest gadgets. Everybody's value structures will be different.

So on my TikTok, I’ve shown my self getting very stressed. I’ve tried so many different sales tactics, but nothing worked. I’m crippled so I can’t work, so it’s been easy to get stressed. I think I might want to tutor math, but I know it’ll take time. I’m not sure if I should make a new account, or just set all my old content to private and re-brand since it took me almost a year just to get to 4.7k followers on TikTok. What do you think? I’m scared to restart because of how long it took me to get my current followers

It's good you acknowledge bad reviews and reply with an apology. I've seen some shockingly immature and dishonest business owners in Australia who make up fake reasons why customers aren't happy and write it underneath. I'm a person with fairly low expectations, so I typically write 5-star reviews for businesses 90% of the time, but I had a beauty appointment in Brisbane, Australia, when I was on holiday there and discovered when I arrived that it was fake advertising and you had to pay twice as much for the service as they advertised, so I left and gave them a 1-star review warning others. The lady wrote all of these lies underneath falsely claiming I'd told her I expect to look half my age after the beauty treatment, which is untrue, I simply told her calmly I'm not going to be scammed into paying twice the advertised price and left. I just can't believe all the lying and dishonesty that occurs in Brisbane. Glad to see you're an Aussie business owner who is mature and reasonable.
